Our next troop campout is fast approaching: May 5-7 we will be going to Jim Thorpe to bike the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway Trail. All skill levels can attend as we are planning different length treks based on age and type of bike (i.e. no gears = no long ride!). There is a Cycling merit badge (not required, just FYI) which requires 2 rides of 2 miles, 5 miles, and 8 miles – and one big ride of 22 miles. The older boys can knock out the 22 mile ride on this campout!
Spring time weather is upon us and the ride is scenic with a modest 2% downhill grade which makes this a great trip for our newly crossed over boys as well as our older scouts – fun for all! The trail is mostly flat, hence all skill levels are welcome.
We are camping at the Mount Chunk Lake Park in Jim Thorpe with enough space for our entire troop and then some – so let’s see if we can get everyone to go! I hope we can have our patrol cheers and maybe some fun patrol skits to create some great memories by the camp fire Saturday night.
We will send out additional details as we firm up plans, but the basic logistics are we will be meeting at the church on Friday night and we can trailer your bikes up on a flatbed trailer that is being arranged – you just have to get the bike to the church. We will hit the trails on Saturday, spend the evening working on achievements, bonfire skits, and some downtime for the exhausted then back to Doylestown (most likely the library) late morning on Sunday.
You must have a bike helmet, extra bike tube, and water bottle or camelback (aka hydration pack) to go on this trip. We are trying to arrange to have a local bike shop come to one of our upcoming meetings to discuss bike safety and basic mechanics, i.e. change a flat tire.
